This Pulitzer Prize winning book is the most uniquely written book that I have ever read. It combines a serious historical context, with a compelling contemporary narrative. It is the story of Oscar, A Dominican nerd who cannot find companionship, no matter how hard he tries.”The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao,” refers back to a made up curse that was inflicted on the Spanish when they discovered the Dominican Republic. This curse is described as the Fukú curse. This made up word, along with other clever language constructs, make the book a joy to read. Knowing Spanish and any aspect of the culture, makes the book even more interesting.

The story takes place in Paterson, NJ, and in the Dominican Republic. Trujillo, the former dictator of the country, is featured prominently in the story. His extensive wrath and sexual avarice are critical to the story line. I recommend this book wholeheartedly.
