Paulo Coelho is a master at writing stories that provide a glimpse into human frailties. He is a modern parable teller. "The Devil and Miss Prym" is no exception to his style and does indeed provide the most telling view of temptation and our typical response to it.

In this parable of good and evil, a stranger visits a remote town called, Viscos and tempts a young woman and the town as a whole with several gold bars. These gold bars are worth so much to these poor villagers that they consider his proposition. Even the town priest is convinced that it would no be so bad if they committed the murder that the stranger demands.

This murder must take place within a week for the village to earn the hidden gold bars. He even tells the townspeople that they can select the weakest and least important member of the community. He does not care as long as someone shows up murdered in a week.

This is the premise of this book which is neither perfect nor horrible. I will not ruin any more of the plot since that is what makes the book so interesting. I also will not tell you whether good or evil wins at the end.

Take a look for yourself. You will not be disappointed at having had an enjoyable read.
